The Sumter Education Foundation received a $25,000 grant from Duke Energy Foundation to create powerful communities in Sumter, South Carolina. Funds from this grant provided students with 20+ books (fiction and nonfiction) to keep at home. Students selected their books in a book fair styled format held at the end of each week of summer reading camp. In addition to the books, students will be provided a one-year subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine and Highlights magazine.

This year’s theme was Soaring to New Heights where students learned about space, flight, and animals. Students participated in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) experiences while building key literacy skills.

The Duke Energy Foundation’s Powerful Communities program makes strategic investments to build powerful communities where our natural resources thrive, students can excel and a talented workforce drives economic prosperity for all. The Foundation annually funds more than $30 million to communities throughout Duke Energy’s seven-state service area.
